By KOPANO MONAHENG
The annual Engen Champ of Champs tournament is back, with soccer fans across the country looking forward to the much-anticipated competition.
Taking place during the FIFA international break, the tournament will shine the spotlight on up-and-coming football stars looking to make their mark and take the next step in their careers.

The Engen Champ of Champs, which carries the slogan “Where Diski Legends Start”, will be staged at the University of Pretoria’s High-Performance Centre from 2 to 4 October.
The 18 teams, comprising men’s and women’s football teams, that will compete in the tournament were unveiled at the media launch yesterday.

Former Orlando Pirates goalkeeper and ambassador of Engen Brighton Mhlongo, who has been involved in the development of football in the country, highlighted the importance of creating opportunities for young players and inspiring the next generation of football stars.

Mhlongo said the tournament was about more than just football, as it continued to provide hope and opportunities for young players and their communities.

“I think most importantly, it’s all about the journey that one has worked before. I sit here in a room full of people who aspire to serve with a purpose and for the betterment of our country,” said Mhlongo.

He added that the tournament’s continued existence over the years was commendable, despite challenges such as the Covid-19 pandemic.

“To be able to do this for over two decades, that’s truly commendable. We’ve seen so much talent. Yes, it wasn’t easy. There were times during Covid when the tournament couldn’t progress, but you guys found a way to keep the kids engaged,” he said.

Mhlongo described the tournament as a beacon of hope for footballers and communities, thanking the organisers for their continued commitment to developing young talent.

Asked what separates the Engen Champ of Champs from other tournaments, Mhlongo pointed to the strong community support and the atmosphere created around the competition.

He said the presence of parents, supporters and members of the media helped motivate the young players while ensuring their stories were told.

“The importance of the tournament, that’s what makes it special — the number of people who come through, celebrating this prestigious moment with us,” he said.

Mhlongo added that the support players receive from their families, fans and the media plays an important role in encouraging them to pursue their football ambitions.
