Dr Sizwe Nxasana is proof that education can open many doors if you work hard and remain determined.
Along with Dr Judy Dlamini, he started Future Nation Schools (FNS), which has become a success. FNS consists of primary and high schools located across two campuses in Johannesburg.

Nxasana said 2017 was when everything became a reality, with children starting their learning journey at FNS from Grade R to matric.
Today, his focus is on Grade R teaching and learning as FNS prepares to host an Open Day on 17 October at its Fleurhof and Lyndhurst campuses in Johannesburg, where parents are encouraged to attend in big numbers.
“Grade R is where we can begin nurturing those capabilities. Children are naturally curious. The challenge for education is to build on that curiosity as they move into more structured learning,” he said.

Grade R is often viewed primarily as preparation for Grade 1, with emphasis on recognising letters and numbers, following instructions, and developing early language and numeracy skills. While these foundations remain important, children also need opportunities to develop confidence, curiosity, communication, problem-solving and the ability to persist when learning becomes challenging.
“Education should never simply be about preparing a child for the next grade. It must prepare young people to think, adapt and contribute meaningfully to the world around them,” said Nxasana.
He said children can only excel at school if they receive a proper foundation-phase education.
The “Start Right, Start Now” campaign encourages parents considering Grade R for 2027 to look closely at the learning environment, teaching approach and values shaping their child’s educational journey.

The aim is to ensure that children are properly stimulated and are not on the back foot when they start primary school.
